can hire a cart, and can purchase a horse for $30 fifteen of which he can get credit for till he can earn the money – his mother who is a poor woman will lend him five dollars, and the committee agrees to lend him ten dollars to be returned as soon as he may be able to do it. He has produced a certificate from Jonathan Knapp assistant keeper of good conduct while at Sing Sing – fifty cents was advanced to him on the 25th inst -

James Rice, born in Ireland – was convicted in this City for passing counterfeit money and was sentenced for five years – served his time out, admits that he was guilty of the offence for which he was convicted – was discharged the 18th instant and has since that time been living in the family of John Luckey, the chaplain at Sing Sing – he is recommended by Isaac Birdsall – is pennyless and wants employment as a cooper- Aged 32 years – resides temporarily at No 99 Worthington Street – Says he sold a coat for $20 and watch for ten dollars and was paid in counterfeit money which, at the time, he believed to be good – but attempted to pass it after he discovered that it was counterfeit.

Eli Cane aged about 42 – was convicted in this city and 12 mo 28th 1839 was sentenced for seven years for [coining] money – says he was innocent of the charge made against him – was pardoned by the President and discharged the 11th of 12th month last – he now drives a cart for his brother – resides at 463 Washington St – is greatly in need of clothing – was born in Sharon Ct –
