2 month 10th 1845
James Rice who was employed by Peter Maxwell called this morning and informs me that in consequence of his not being perfect in all the branches of the trade of a cooper – he was discharged after remaining there three days – James has brought the tools we procured for his use and has deposited them in this office untill [sic] he can get employment elsewhere.
11th
James Rice, through the agency of William H Channing has engaged with James P Decker No 23 Nassau St who has generously agreed to perfect James in the business of a cooper.
Edward Ryan born in Ireland discharged this day from the Hospital on Blackwells Island where had been three months and eleven days to be cured of a complaint which he contracted by his vicious practices – he is intirely destitute. Recommended him to the Temperance Society and gave him twenty five cents. He was referred to me by R N Havens.
John Toker called in company with Edward Ryan he was also discharged from the Hospital on Blackwells Island where he has been for three months and ten days under the same circumstances as Ryan. Recommended him to the Temperance Society and gave him twenty five cents.

By a few lines from Townsend Sharpless we are informed that Alexander Walker could not by assisted by their society, but that some aid was rendered him by individuals. Sent Townsend Sharpless 18 copies “First Report.”

Received a few lines from Charles Spear of Boston making enquiry respecting the opperations of the Prison Association - paid 8/100 postage. Replied to his interrogatories and sent him three copies "First Report."
