Called at the dwelling of Philip McCready No 99 Norfolk St – he had just gone out- his wife informed me that he had procured a horse and cart – but that the depth of snow in the streets had prevented him from doing much business – She also informed me that Philip continued steady – the appearance of their children and of the room they occupy seemed to indicate prudent and careful management.

Received from Josiah Tatum Philadelphia "Journal of Prison Discipline and Philanthropy" Vol 1 - No 1- Paid postage 24 cents.

Archibald D Cummins, aged about 52 years, was convicted at Clarkstown, Rockland county, for ten years, for passing counterfeit money- served his time out – was liberated two years ago last November – when discharged was greatly debilitated in body and mind – has a wife and six children – the youngest is 16 years old- they are provided for. He now lives with his wifes son in law John Thompkins. Last maker, No 44 Spring street. Archibald has been attending market – is a fuller and dyer by trade but is now out of business – wants employment. He appears to be an object of compassion. “can turn his hand to anything.”

20th

William Meighan – aged 28 – born in Ireland – has been in this country ten years – has a wife and four children – has been in the Penitentiary on Blackwells Island six months for neglecting his family and treating them unkindly – was liberated this day – has followed the business of a Pedler is now intirely destitute – has been intemperate, but has taken the pledge of temperance and says it is his determination to abstain from intoxicating liquors in future – is strongly recommended by John F Driggs, Keeper.
