New York City was a rapidly growing city, and a destination for immigrants from around the world. It was ripe for a Cholera epidemic to occur due to poor health conditions and its large population.[1]
Interestingly enough there were many Cholera Hospitals in the city of the New York as the outbreak turned into an epidemic. New York City commissioners took control of a building on 105 Franklin Street and then another Cholera Hospital opened at a schoolhouse on Mott Street in Manhattan. The bigger outbreak occurred in 1854, but hospitals for cholera patients very much existed prior, which is what Henry Weakly was helping with.[2]More hospitals were establish as outbreaks continued to worsen.
